Lab fee

Also called: laboratory fee, lab bill, laboratory charge

A lab fee is the amount a dental lab charges a practice for a case. On a patient’s bill or a claim, the same words mean the laboratory charge a practice reports beside the procedure it relates to. A lab sets its fees in a fee schedule, by type of work and material.

How it shows up between practice and lab

The lab fee appears at three points: when the lab lists or quotes it, when the lab invoices the practice, and when the practice reports it on a claim.

Those three need to agree. An invoice that names the patient, the tooth, the work and the date lets the practice match it to the right claim without a call.

Extras cause the surprises. Rush charges, remakes and implant parts are easier to accept when the lab’s policy is written down in advance.
