Dental lab prescription

Also called: Rx, lab Rx, work authorization

A dental lab prescription, or Rx, is the dentist’s written instruction to a dental lab for one case. It names the patient, the teeth, the restoration or appliance, the material, the shade and the date the work is needed. In British Columbia, the regulation says a dental technician makes an appliance on receiving a prescription.

How it shows up between practice and lab

The Rx sets up everything that follows. A complete one lets the lab start the same day, and a missing detail sends the lab to the phone.

The details that get left off are ordinary ones: the shade, the due date, the tooth number or the material. Each one stops the case until someone answers.

A digital Rx carries the same fields with the scans attached. Both sides read the same version, and a change made by one is seen by the other.
