Dental technician

Also called: dental technologist, dental lab technician, lab technician

A dental technician makes and repairs dental restorations and appliances, such as crowns, bridges, dentures and night guards, to a dentist’s prescription. Technicians work in dental labs or in practices with their own labs. In British Columbia the title is protected, and technicians are licensed by the BC College of Oral Health Professionals.

How it shows up between practice and lab

A technician may never meet the patient. Everything the technician knows about the mouth comes from the Rx, the scans or impressions, and the photos.

That is why the quality of the handoff shows up in the work. A clear Rx and a prompt answer to a question let the technician keep going.

Rules for technicians are set province by province. A lab should check with its own regulator, and a practice can ask who a lab’s licensed technicians are.
