Ceramist
Also called: dental ceramist, ceramic technician
A ceramist is a dental technician who specializes in ceramic restorations such as crowns, veneers and bridges. The ceramist shapes the restoration and builds or stains its colour so that it matches the teeth beside it. In a small lab the owner may also be the ceramist, and a larger lab has a separate ceramics bench.
How it shows up between practice and lab
The ceramist works from what the practice sends. A shade code gives one colour, while a photo with the tab beside the tooth shows where the colour changes.
For a front tooth, some labs invite the patient in for a custom shade visit, so the ceramist can see the tooth in person.
Feedback is useful at this bench. A short note after the seat appointment, with a photo, tells the ceramist what to repeat.
